The elementary requirements for admission into the Basic General Nursing training program

  • Applicants should be above 17 years and not more than 26 years
  • The program plans for at least three years
  • A minimum of five credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry & Biology in their O’level examinations, which should not be more than two Sitting.
  • Unmarried women who become pregnant or commit an abortion during their training would be dismissed from their current program.

Admission Requirements into the Post Basic Nursing Midwifery Programme

Those who wish to apply for the Post Basic Nursing program must have the following:-

  • Applicant should not be aged less than 18 years or above 34 years
  • Five credit passes in SSCE, WASSCE/NECO, or GCE including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at not more than two sittings.
  • The Candidate must be a Registered Nurse (RN) under the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
  • Students who become pregnant during their training are allowed to continue the program and are allowed to take study leaves, have their baby, and resume studies thereafter. However, the rules stipulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria holds that students who are absent from class for twenty-one (21) days or more, are stepped down to a lower class.

  • Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, Benin

The Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, Benin, had lost their accreditation back in 2012 but were awarded the merits of the accreditation just in October 2021. The provisional accreditation for the General Nursing and Basic Midwifery programs, with effect from October 2021, was conferred on the school by the Secretary-general and Registrar of the council, Faruk Umar Abubakar.

The NMCN explained that the school got its accreditation back because they had put efforts to break new grounds in the Institution. While adding that the school now meets up with the standard requirements for training students in the health sector, building the correct human capital necessary to steer and promote academic developments in healthcare.

 The letter from the Council stated:

“The board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria according to section 14 (sub-section 1 and 2) of Act 143, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2004), has approved the establishment of the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, Benin City, Edo State,”

“In the light of that, I wish to convey the board’s approval to commence training of Nurses and Midwives at the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, Benin City, Edo State.”

The approval covers “General Nursing Programme-Provisional Accreditation Status of one hundred (100) Students’ intake with effect from October 2021 and Basic Midwifery Programme-Provisional Accreditation Status of one hundred (100) Students’ intake with effect from October 2021.”
