Enrolling in a rudimentary nursing education program is a fundamental prerequisite to becoming a Registered Nurse.

Basic Nursing Education Programs are offered by the Schools of Nursing (SON) in Nigeria. These are academic institutions accredited to run Basic Nursing and Basic/Post-Basic Midwifery programs.

List Of Federal School Of Nursing

The basic nursing programs in these institutions run for three (3) years while that of the Post-Basic training is for a period of 18 months to two (2) years. At the end of this students are certified, registered, and licensed to practice by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

How To Enroll For A Nursing Program In Any Accredited Institutions

  • To enroll in a nursing program in any of these institutions,
  • Students will have to purchase application forms for their school of choice.
  • Sit for the entrance examination.
  • Attend interviews and screening exercises conducted by the institution.
  • Candidates that succeed in the interview phase will be offered provisional admission into the Nursing program of choice by the institution.
  • Candidates admitted into any of the Basic Nursing/Midwifery Programs will undergo intensive training/lectures in Basic Sciences and Nursing Courses for six months after which an introductory examination will be conducted.
  • Only successful students at the introductory examination will be Indexed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria while the remaining students will be withdrawn from the program.
  • And upon successful completion of the program, they will be licensed and inducted to practice by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

Admission Requirements

  • Candidates must possess at least five (5) credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in not more than two (2) sittings for WAEC, NECO, and/or NABTEB.
  • Students with foreign examination board results (s) are expected to submit an evaluation report or equivalent grading from the Federal Ministry of Education along with the result. It is required that a request for the verification of these results from the issuing organization be submitted to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
  • The acceptable minimum age range to enroll in any of the nursing programs is 16 years.
