STEP BY STEP PROCESS OF BECOMING A NURSE IN IRELAND
The regulatory body for nursing & midwifery in Ireland is known as Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) www.nmbi.ie.

- Register for IELTS or OET. Under the new protocols, the NMBI requires minimum

- To practice nursing or midwifery in Ireland, you will need to complete two processes:
- Recognition of qualifications – this involves the comparison of your qualifications with the Irish education standards and requirements.
- Registration.

Do not move to Ireland or leave your current employment, based on the expectation that your Registration will be successful. Please wait until you receive a registration decision before making any travel or employment plan.
Do not apply for nursing and Midwifery job until you have received a Registration decision, Applications cannot be fast tracked based on offers of emplyment, as this would be unfair to other Application
Applying for qualification recognition in a division (specialty registration): To apply for qualifications recognition in a division of the Register, you must have completed a
qualification that meets the standards and requirements for that division. For example, if you qualified as a General Nurse with NMBI, you are eligible to apply for qualifications reecognition. However, if you qualified as a general nurse only and have gained considerable experience working as a children’s nurse in another country, your qualifications will not be eligible for recognition as a children’s nurse.
You would need to have completed an appropriate qualification i.e training as a children’s nurse that meets the NMBI’s standards and requirements before NMBI can consider your application for registration in this division.
If you want to apply for qualifications recognition in a specific division of the Register, and your training for that division was completed after your initial training as a nurse or midwife, there are some specific qualifications recognition requirements. For example, NMBI will need to consider your initial registration as a general nurse or midwife first before considering an application for registration in another division. This will happen when your application is being assessed.

Stage 1: Recognition Process Overview – These are the steps required to apply for qualifications recognition:
- Log into MyNMBI @ www.nmbi.ie
- Set up an account.
- Answer questions to allow NMBI classify your application.
- The list of required documents will be presented to you.
- Obtain all the required documentation (qualification certificates, transcripts,
- NMCN verification etc), upload to MyNMBI (and translations if needed) and pay the appropriate fee. NMBI will then review your application and email you the recognition outcome.
- Possible outcomes: qualifications recognized or submit missing document(s) or a compensation measure is required or qualifications refused for recognition.
- The last two outcomes are provisional and can be appealed.
Stage 2: Registration Process Overview – These are the steps required to apply for
registration:
Log into MyNMBI
- Answer questions to allow NMBI classify your application.
- Provide evidence of English language competence.
- The list of required documents will be presented to you obtain all the required documentation to MYNMBI ( with Certified translation of needed)These documents would include your work experience, references from your workplaces; previous and current – must cover the period starting from when you left school till the time of the application. They may ask for other documents depending on what they require from you.
- NMBI will then review your application and email you the outcome. Possible outcomes: You are now registered or resubmit missing document(s) or registration with conditions attached or registration refused. The last two
- outcomes are provisional and can be appealed.
- Positive outcome will require that you either sit for the RCSI Aptitude Test( Theory and Practical) organised by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) or you undergo an adaptation process (usually in approved hospitals) to get your registration pin. The RCSI Aptitude Test or Adaptation Process is
- referred to as “Compensation measures” in the decision letter that would be sent to you. You can look for jobs with the decision letter.
- Then your employer would sponsor the exam or adaptation depending on the agreement.
